I was doing a bit of organizing over the weekend and stumbled upon some old work I had created. It was mostly self promotional items which, for some reason or another, got tossed aside. I started opening the files… and one by one I started to see what I once was.
In years past I would come home from work full of ideas that needed to be executed. The only driving force was to create. As I studied some of the designs, I noticed styles which are trends today. Was I ahead of my time? Who knows…
The present me has grown and changed as a designer. My drive is no longer based on creative alone, but keeping clients happy, despite some of their outlandish requests at times. Upon my return home I find myself more involved with expanding my arsenal of tools and knowledge. This isn’t a bad thing; I just wonder where that urge is… to design something just for design’s sake.
Sometimes we need to take a look back at ourselves and think about why we got into this business in the first place. If we do this from time to time we will always stay on the path we created.
